DESCRIPTION OF PIECE

Good Grief! is a sad clown companion-ship careening through a sea of glamorous grief. Through burlesque, video art, contemporary dance, clown and theater this deeply heartfelt duet lays bare how pain is so close to pleasure, loss so close to love, and grief an absurd mixed up process of clinging tight & letting go. Moving through despair towards a love large enough to carry both grief and celebration in life together as one, Good Grief! invites the jostling loose and letting out of hoots & hollers, laughter & tears, and anything else that might be shed, lost, or set free.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Rough & Tumble creates and curates artistic work that blurs the boundaries of dance and theater, finding new ways to explode the underbelly of our innermost worlds outward, making our culture and its questions apparent. Our performances, workshops, and advocacy initiatives invite others into a space of awareness, acceptance and hopefully integration of the most vulnerable, essential parts of ourselves and our human experiences. In 2023 R & T toured Good Grief! to Baltimore, produced a Grief Cabaret featuring 15 Philly-based performers, and premiered both Magic Trash Day, an interactive outdoor kids’ show about big feelings and Make Bank, a site-specific collaboration with internationally-renowned muralist, Meg Saligman. ​​
