"Widening the Circle" is a humorous, thought-provoking dance theater production that weaves a series of duets into an evening of spoken word, dance, and video projections. Fellow Travelers Performance Group choreographer and Artistic Director, Cynthia Adams, is joined by dancer Paula McArthur in a collection of dance theater pieces with topics of social, political and women’s issues. At times whimsical, at times dark and emotional, always thought provoking, blurring the edge of dance and theater with text and movement and audience participation. “Adams attempts a mix of humor, pathos and nostalgia and comes up a winner. “ Allan Ulrich, San Francisco Examiner ABOUT THE ARTIST At the juncture of dance and theater Cynthia Adams, Artistic Director of Fellow Travelers Performance Group (FTPG) creates whimsical yet punchy choreography, blending movement and spoken word into thought provoking playful collages. Her concept driven, witty, dance theater pieces invite audience members to join the performers on a journey into worlds inspired by women’s issues, climate change, and other current political themes. FTPG formed in 1992 in the San Francisco Bay Area, has performed in the US and Vancouver, BC and has received numerous grants and residencies. Most recently Ms. Adams was awarded a J.W. Fisher Endowed Arts Outreach Fund (2024) and a Creative Catalyst Project Grant from the Iowa Arts Council (2023). “Their (FTPG’s) work is smart, idiosyncratic, and carefully crafted. When they use a prop, it’s exactly tailored to the work in question. They know not only how to use text but also how to project it. Irony and wit, staples in their toolbox, are used to explore and illuminate matters of the heart.” Rita Felciano |
